Truth: The Way Things Really Are

John Adams said, “Facts are stubborn things.”  People are generally free to form their own opinions about the world they live in, and they can certainly choose to follow any belief system they wish.  But when it comes to what people claim to be the truth, they cannot have their own facts when those facts do not comport with reality because the truth is ultimate reality—it is the way things really are.

Since the truth is the way things really are, the many belief systems in the world that factually contradict one another cannot possibly all be true. At every point where the firmly held tenets of one belief system contradict the firmly held tenets of another, one system or the other is necessarily invalidated because both systems cannot possibly comport with ultimate reality and be factually and uniquely true.

It may be that one belief system is true and the other false, or that both contradictory belief systems are false, but they cannot both be true.  Thus, a great many of the belief systems in the world are demonstrably false and not worthy of serious consideration by thinking people anywhere. But because of our societal cowardice in failing to denounce these false belief systems, we feign respect for them instead and pretend that they might be true anyway.

Since the truth is discoverable and knowable, those who seek it will sooner or later prevail over the advocates of falsehood and error simply because it is true—correctly indicative of the way things really are. Similarly, any belief system genuinely rooted in truth will endure and succeed at the expense of all others not so rooted simply because it is true—correctly grounded in the way things really are.

Truth as ultimate reality stands as true regardless of what anyone thinks about it.  Truth also stands as true regardless of whether anyone actually aligns his life with it and follows it or not.  Rejecting the truth is the ultimate form of failure because it involves rejecting ultimate reality, the way things really are.  There is simply no way to live contrary to the way things really are and yet still succeed in life.

Thus, any worldview that is contrary to truth is doomed to fail; any philosophy that is contrary to truth is doomed to fail; any religion that is contrary to truth is doomed to fail; and any lifestyle that is contrary to truth is doomed to fail.  Similarly, the adherents of all worldviews, philosophies, religions and lifestyles that are contrary to truth no matter how dedicated and sincere these persons may seem to be are doomed to fail and go down to their deaths with nothing to show for their misspent lives.  Proverbs 14:12 confirms that “There is a way that seems right to a man but its end is the way of death.”

So what is the truth? Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.  No one comes unto the Father except by Me,” John 14:6. Psalm 2:12 also warns, “Kiss [or embrace] the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.” Christian believers have accepted as true that Jesus is the Son of God, put their trust in Him, and seek to live their lives in obedience to Him because He is the way things really are.

Unfortunately, most of those inhabiting the planet scoff at the Bible’s claims about the life of Jesus and His identity as the Son of God.  They do so because admitting these things to be true would require them to admit the falsity of their own worldviews. It would also expose their works as evil, and demand that they submit to an utterly holy and righteous God Whom they are in open rebellion against.

If Jesus is the Son of God as He claims, then He is the Truth that ought to be obeyed. If He is the Truth, then rejecting Him is also rejecting ultimate reality and the way things really are. This is an outrageous form of defiance that according to Psalm 2:12 and many other passages from the Bible provokes the wrath of God Himself.

What about you? Are you honestly and earnestly seeking the truth, or are you satisfied just pretending that your own belief system is true?  And are you willing to accept Jesus as the Son of God and live in obedience to Him, or are you still refusing to submit to Him as the Truth, ultimate reality and the way things really are?
